Coton De Tulear Specification

The Coton De Tulear is a Bichon type dog which is descended from the small white dogs of Madagascar which were believed to have been brought to the Mediterranean region by a shipwreck in 1665. These small white dogs existed in Europe as early as the 1500s according to written references of the time. It is a small dog standing no higher than 10-11 inches at the withers. The small white dogs ran wild in packs on the island. This little dog has a sweet but also playful demeanor and is a gentle and affectionate little dog.



Coton de Tulear dogs are an elegant rare breed. In French "cotton" means cotton. Coton de Tulear's are graceful and exceptionally agile. They have a compact, slightly larger than tall body. This dog can be born into a litter of normal-sized parents.

Coton de Tulear dogs are calm and non-aggressive.

Charactertics and temperament

A short walk everyday will be enough exercise for them although they can go on longer walks. Coton de Tulear dogs are a hearty and healthy breed since they have not been over bred.
